  • Oil in the Water

  • Come on BP. Can't you invest just a little bit more into the type of equipment that prevents massive oil spills?

  • R&D on clean-up technologies neglected before the oil spill...

  • As much as some people insist that more regulations are bad for businesses... without them you essentially get companies acting with impunity. Profit is just too powerful of a motivator to assume people and companies will behalf rationally. And just because we've seen a few specific examples recently in the housing markets, the financial sector, and now the energy sector doesn't mean it is not pervasive throughout most industries and corporations. It is apparently bad for business to worry too much about accidents until after they've happened. And who cares anyway... if the accident is REALLY bad, they can just shift the toxic assets/problems to a subsidiary and simply declare bankruptcy. It happens all the time with mountain-top removal of coal... sigh. http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5i0-vrkse69xsLJHx1KBZUj7rDJyAD9GJ30FG0

  • Will BP chemical dispersants be the lasting problem of the gulf oil spill?

  • Seems obvious that the answer to chemicals in our ocean would not be to add more chemicals, but, hey, chemists can do some smart and amazing things. So, I suppose there was a chance that the chemical dispersant logic was counter-intuitive - that is, good. The more I read, the less that seems the case. This article is particularly alarming because it not only explains risks of using these chemicals, but it highlights how poorly regulated they are. Not only do companies not have regulations to guide them, they also have regulatory incentives to use the harmful chemicals because, after all, they are only tasked with making the oil disappear. http://www.triplepundit.com/2010/07/bp-gulf-disaster-act-two-the-corexit-calamity/
