  • Despite a lot of the controversy that Shai Agassi's battery swapping stations are shortsighted, a waste of money, and will cause the entire project to be financially unsustainable, they will prove to be essential to the transition to electric cars. The fact of the matter is that most batteries today will not permit cars to exceed 100 miles on a single charge without the aid of petrol, ethanol, or the like. Unlike hybrids, Better Place promises to lift us from our oil crutch in one fell swoop, and although battery technology is rapidly improving it does not provide the range we need to motivate people to switch to electric cars today - and incentives are definitely needed to make this switch as soon as possible.
