  • Inevitable Obsolesence

  • A couple issues I noticed with Better Place's business plan: 1) While electric cars today do not have a 200 mile+ range, battery technology will improve rapidly. It is in the forseeable future that electric cars that won't need to be charged or have their batteries swapped for multiple days/weeks will be mass produced. By this time e-car drivers will swap their batteries rarely if ever, and hundreds of millions in infrastructure will be put to pasture. 2) Already we see charging stations popping up everywhere: at homes, work, restaurants, shopping centers, streetsides - you can put an electric outlet anywhere. When it becomes feasible to "top off" anywhere you were going to stop anyway, running low on battery power will become a rarity, another factory rendering swapping stations rather obsolete. And for long trips, most people would stop for coffee or food anyway, so why not just plug in and top off as you eat? Just a few thoughts about the inevitability of swapping stations phasing out - after hundreds of millions in investment. While range anxiety is a problem now for e-cars, when it ceases to be what will become of Better Place?
