Great White Sharks equal Hannibal Lecter?!? The AP should be ashamed of themselves!

Think the headline "Great white sharks hunt just like Hannibal Lecter" is fair? The AP does - http://bit.ly/Md197
It would be great if we could stop sensationalizing news like this so we can focus on the real work and good that can be done by researching nature, oceans and animals.

More Education Needed on Earth Day and Being Green
|
Modified:291 days ago

|
I saw this on a New York City sidewalk yesterday. I can just imagine young William at school being handed a plastic bottle, walking over to the recycling bin, tossing in the bottle and then being given this note to take home. This is, by no means, the school's fault or the student's. I applaud the school for teaching about Earth Day and I'm not sure many adults fully understand Earth Day and the need to think about the environment in all of the decisions we make (although, I do think William should know better than to litter.)
I posted this picture mainly because it is emblematic of how most people feel about Earth Day and acting to preserve our environment. Often forgotten the next day, Earth Day needs some sort of daily or weekly reminder - something to encourage people to carry this message into their daily lives, something that will make looking out for the environment as second-nature as tossing trash on the ground is today. The Day After Earth Day
|
Modified:292 days ago
|
|
The day after Earth Day was exactly why SocialYell was founded. What do companies do during the remainder of they year? Some do the right thing and make environmental responsibility part of every-day operations, but others paint themselves green only when marketing opportunities present themselves. Fine - the opportunity to market and bring awareness to green actions is here on SocialYell everyday. In an ideal world, perhaps, companies would be able to profit and protect the enviroment for its own sake, but this isn't a perfect world, so a forum is needed to promote green-minded businesses all year.
That ensures that it is not only the right thing to do but also the profitable thing to do.

Green Building and LEED
|
Modified:300 days ago

As I was walking our dog, Gus, today, I found a building that was undergoing a "green" renovation. A few questions jumped into my mind. First is: why would a builder do a green renovation in this economy?
1) because it saves energy or reused materials and, therefore, reduces cost?
2) because green buildings hold their value, are easier to market or command a higher purchase price?
3) because it is the right thing to do so that building, in general, can be sustainable?
I suspect that the first two have a big impact in this economy. The fact is, though, I am fine with that. I am not just a fan of the environment, I am a fan of business. Businesses can be innovative, can provide goods people need and can be powerful social forces. I think it is ideal when profit aligns with good decisions.
The next question was: why get the green building LEED certified? I can quickly think of two reasons. 1) Leed sets the guidelines so builders and buyers can understand what criteria must be met and 2) LEED is the marketing tool used to communicate the value that was created.
In this way, LEED is a lot like SocialYell. The community can create - through discussion - the guidelines for certifying that organizations are socially and environmentally responsible. Then - through ratings - the community can communicate or market socially good actions achieved by organizations.
What do you think? I'd really like to hear from people who understand LEED better than I do!

Welcome to SocialYell
|
Modified:337 days ago
|

I am excited to introduce SocialYell in a closed beta testing period!
SocialYell will help improve the socially and ecologically responsible actions of businesses and organizations. By providing a forum for users to discuss and debate the social responsibility of specific organizations with each other AND with the organizations, themselves.
Users can assess the impact of the organizations' behavior by rating them. They can also determine the magnitude of that impact (i.e. everyone must pay attention to this discussion!) by voting. This combination gives accountability and credit to the right organizations and helps consumers choose the right organizations to buy from, donate to or support.
We will be launching to the public in just a few months, but we would like to hear from you. If you would like to get more information about the site or would like to help, email us at info@socialyell.com
